“A new Star Wars film may be cooking and the chef is reportedly none other than our very own Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy.”

Another huge moment in the global entertainment industry for Pakistan came in with the Pakistani-born Canadian Filmmaker and two-time Oscar winner Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy being selected by the Star Wars Franchise as a director.

According to Deadline (entertainment website), a director has been chosen for the new Star Wars movie that Damon Lindelof will be developing and co-writing for Lucasfilm. The project will feature Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy as a director, who is well known for directing Ms. Marvel.

Director and producer Obaid-Chinoy has a number of credits in both television and film and has won both an Oscar and an Emmy. The talented Pakistani-born director won two Oscars in the Best Documentary: Short Subject category for her work on the films Saving Face and A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness, both of which also won Emmys in 2017 and 2013, for which she split the award with David Junge.

Among twenty-one awards in total, her work has also seen her win other Emmys for Pakistan’s Taliban Generation and Frontline/ World. More recently, Obaid-Chinoy directed several episodes of Disney’s Ms Marvel series, and is currently on board to direct Paramount’s adaptation of Brilliance, which will star Will Smith.
